Le double visage

1972, dry point copper engraving, 21 x 16 cm
final proof on Zerkal paper 54x38.3

With this dry point engraving, which is one of his most sophisticated works dealing with the representation of shapes, Gaston Bertrand reinterpreted the cubist technique which consists in “welding” a figure’s face and profile. The first proof states date back to 1968 and 1969, when the artist was particularly interested in human figures mainly because he was preparing some portraits. During that same period, he also produced a painting quite similar to this engraving, Figure fragile, which was probably inspired by his first dry point experiments.
