“I have changed since my young age and I think it would be necessary for me to make a new self-portrait […] It is not only that I see myself aging but I also describe myself. Painting is nothing but a self-description, a description of your own life”. Thus, in 1980, Gaston Bertrand examined his own face in the mirror again. He produced around twenty sepia sketches on Japanese paper, which later gave rise to five self-portraits. As he used to do so in the 1970s and 1980s, the painter integrated some architectural elements into the figure and thus erased the idea of a décor as we can see in this watercolour.
