Adriana

1954, oil painting on canvas, 65 x 81 cm
Coll. Museum L, Louvain-la-Neuve (Serge Goyens de Heusch donation)
N° inv. 638

The excursions that Bertrand made to the outskirts of Rome allowed him to discover the via Appia antica, the Castel Gandolfo, the Monte Cavo, the villa d’Este and the Villa Adriana’s “absorbing and even surrealist atmosphere” to which the artist devoted a watercolour as well as an oil painting entitled Adriana in 1954.
As usual, the composition originates from the visual reality of architecture from which Bertrand kept the most striking lines.
