Coll. Gaston Bertrand Foundation

After he bought his studio, Gaston Bertrand could spend long periods of time in Paris during which he got interested in some urban perspectives. More surprisingly, he drew his first sketches of the Paris subway in 1958 while he was exploring the underground universe of this arched labyrinth. In 1964, the artist stayed three times in Paris and renewed his explorations. With more assiduity than ever, he visited various stations and took notes about around fifty perspectives in his sketchbooks. From these ink drawings and notes emerged a remarkable number of works which were produced over a twenty-year period.
