From 21 May to 22 June, second trip to Switzerland at the Château-d’Oex. He visits the city of Fribourg and discovers the small Romanesque Saint-Nicolas Church in the village of Rougemont, which inspires several coloured drawings and, later on, paintings.
On 21 July, he suffers a first heart attack and is hospitalized up to 22 August.

On 24 August, he is the subject of a photographic report by Marc Trivier.

By the end of the year, he makes three short stays in his Parisian studio.

On 23 September, Betty gets her foot crushed by a reckless driver. This accident deeply affects her health condition and causes Gaston Bertrand deep worries.
In October, the Grand-Duchess of Luxembourg purchases around ten works at the artist’s studio for the Grand Duchy collections.

On 6 December, after they eventually took the decision to sell their house-studio on Aubépines Avenue due to a lack of comfort and the fringe location of the house, Bertrand and his wife move into the house that they had bought seven years before at 18 Arnold Delvaux Avenue, Uccle (Brussels).

In April, short stay in Ostend and visit of the Paul Delvaux Foundation in Saint-Idesbald.
In June, he sells his studio in Paris.
The couple stays in Ostend during the month of September, as they would do during several years.

Gaston Bertrand et Sere Goyens de Heusch en 1984On 8 November, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels organize a screening of Gaston Bertrand, La porte entrouverte, a short film devoted to the artist and directed by Chris Vermorcken with the participation of the art critic Jean-Pierre Van Tieghem.
With the aim to show the works that the artist had kept, the Foundation for Belgian Contemporary Art holds an exhibition entitled Les Bertrand de Gaston Bertrand in Brussels. The exhibition is also shown the following year at Museum of Louvain-la-Neuve, with the simultaneous publication of the monograph Gaston Bertrand, Une poétique de la distance, written by Serge Goyens de Heusch.

He spends the second half of May and the month of September in Ostend.
He explores a new subject of inspiration: the Brussels subway, of which he draws thirty-five sketches.
Creation of the Gaston Bertrand Foundation (public utility institution approved by the Royal Decree of 17 December), dedicated to the promotion of the work of the artist.

The Provincial Museum of Modern Art of Ostend and then the Museum of the Walloon Art in Liège exhibit the works belonging to the Gaston Bertrand Foundation.

Bertrand makes thirteen large lead pencil and coloured pencils drawings on the theme of the Brussels subway.

His friend Alla Goldschmidt dies; her significant legacy to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts includes thirty-six oil paintings and watercolours as well as drawings and engravings.

La Jeune Peinture Belge en 1992He produces his last works (three small oil paintings and eight watercolours).
After a long period without any exhibition, he shows his recent works at the Gallery J. Bastien-Art.
He participates in the exhibition Jeune peinture Belge (Young Belgian Painting) held at the Crédit communal Gallery, a major event tracing the plastic adventure that immediately followed the War.

In April, the Belgian Post issues, with seven and a half million copies, a fifteen francs Europa stamp showing a reproduction of one of the artist’s major work (Florence I, 1960).

A partnership agreement between the Gaston Bertrand Foundation and the Ixelles Museum is signed. This agreement leads to a retrospective exhibition showing the works belonging to the Foundation. On this occasion, a long interview of the artist by Serge Goyens de Heusch is recorded.

 
1994

Gaston Bertrand suddenly dies from a heart attack on the night of 21-22 February. His work is safeguarded by the Gaston Bertrand Foundation, which later on organized several exhibitions and initiate many publications devoted to the artist, including the important monograph published in 1997 by the Fonds Mercator in Antwerp and the Catalogue raisonné de l’oeuvre peint, published in 2001 by the Foundation itself.
